The ports are places of mass movement of passengers and tourists serving thousands of people, while their facilities store and transport thousands of cargo. As key sectors of domestic and international trade, port facilities are characterized by an increased risk of adverse reactions while presenting particular security problems.

 

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), recognizing the risks involved, has adopted an international code on ship and port facility security (ISPS-International Ships and Ports Security Code) facilities.
